Have you ever been alone in the dark?And.then,in that deep,black darkness,hear a strange sound…a kind of “bump”?What was it probably just a mouse.Or was it something else?Something strange,Something that does not belong to this world,Something like…a ghost Well,I don’t know if ghosts really exist but I do know that we sometimes like to scare ourselves.In fact,We spend a lot of money trying to scare ourselves.We pay to ride Ferris wheels and roller coasters,and we scream with delight as the rides go higher and get faster .We enjoy that “tingly” feeling we get when we get scared.
But amusement park rides are “real” things.Ghosts and ghouls and the other creatues associated with Halloween live only in our imagination.They are not “real”but they still have the power to frighten us…well,some of us.
Halloween is a special holiday that lets us laugh at our fear of the unknown and the unknowable .We dress up in costumes and pretend to be frightened:we laugh and have fun; we have parties and eat candy .On that night,the ghosts and ghouls of our imagination are rendered harmless things.
That’s why I think it’s strange that some people think that celebrating Halloween encourages superstitious beliefs.It’s just the opposite.
Still,It’s a funny old world.We can’t explain everything that happens:a noise when no one is around or the breeze on the back of your neck that feels like someone’s cold breath!
That’s why on Halloween I always say this little Scottish prayer…just in case
