A new and simple quick-stop device
From the above literature reviews,certain desirable
features and functions of the performance of a QSD can be
set down as follows.(1) The time taken during the toolworkpiece
separation process should be as small as possible.
(2) Geometrical and metallurgical changes in the chip and
the workpiece surface arisen from the action of the device
should be limited to a minimum.(3) Disturbance,such as
vibration,that may occur in the cutting process by the action
of the device should be minimal.(4) The device should
work as a tool post that possesses good characteristics,both
statically and dynamically.(5) The device should be safe
and easy to use,and be adaptable to commercial machine
tools without complex modification.(6) Resetting time of
the device in between applications should be very short.
(7) The device should be reliable and give reproducible
results,and can be manufactured inexpensively.
Following the above design considerations,we developed
the new QSD,as shown in Fig.1 in exploded form.
The design is characterized by the following features.
(1) Total number of component parts is quite limited.Beside
the cutoff tool,only seven components are needed,together
with two pins,three springs and nine screws.(2) Geometry
of each component is quite simple.All component parts can
be manufactured with the fundamental machine tools
available in any machine shop.(3) Weight and volume of
the device are small,meaning that this QSD can be imposed
to the engine lathe without difficulties.(4) Working
principle of the device is purely mechanical,without
employing any explosive charges or breaking any shear
pins.This kind of design is a brand new attempt.The quickstop
experiments can be processed economically and safely.
(5) Operation of the device is very simple.Resetting time of
the device in between applications can be limited to only a
couple of minutes.
