This has lead to much discussion about marriage and family life,particularly in regard to what a woman’s role and duties should be.The result has been that many more women are not only going to work but are having their own careers,their own friends,and their own interests ,quite apart from those of their husbands.At the same time many husbands have accepted the fact that they themselves will have to play a different family role to help more with housework and with the children and to recognize their wives’ rights and wishes.In short,women are no longer accepting their positions as “prisoners” in their own homes,but are fighting to gain acceptance for themselves as full and important human beings.
Without question,women’s lives are improving.But still not all women support the women’s liberation movement.Particularly in small towns,the idea is not taken seriously.Take,for example,the village of Hope,Indiana,with fifteen hundred people (and quite like many other small towns elsewhere).Mrs.Katherine Stafford says:“What you have here are a lot of happy women.Maybe if they weren’t so happy,there might be more interest in women’s liberation.”
Mrs.Judy Douglas says:“I don’t want equal rights with men; I believe the man should be the head of the house.I want to cook and clean and do the work women are supposed to do.How could any woman be happier than that?”
