thereby后面是现在分词引导的结果状语从句,表示谓语trampled vegetation的后果.分词引导状语从句是很常见的结构呀.
第二句显然是错的,如果选第二句的话,括号里面的句子主语是an aid,动词是returned,这样的主谓搭配没有逻辑联系.aid"帮助"是个抽象的东西,是不可能承担“return”这样一个实体的动作的,这和中文的思维习惯很不一样.
