去掉 后主干是
computers were thought of much smaller.
其中 much smaller是形容词作 主语补足语
主动语态是 we thought of computers much smaller
much smaller是宾补
原句因为 插入了不同的状语 故 用逗号 隔开

因为 like people 是插入语，象人一样。如果把这个插入语去掉，就清楚多了：
computers were thought of in terms of generations, with the distance between generations much smaller.
