January 1st is an important date in Greece because it is not only the first day of New Year,but it is also St.Basil's Day..St.Basil was kind to the poor.People think he passed away on this day.
New Year is more important than Christmas in Greece because it is the main day for gift-giving and for stories of St.Basil's kindness to children and the stories of how he would come at night and leave gifts for the children in their shose.
On New Year's Day,people visittheir friends and family members and exchange gifts.On these visits they havea big dinner of delicious food,drinks and music.
There are many special dishes for New Year,but the most important dish is St.Basil's cake.Inside the cake there is a silver or gold coin.The first piece is for St.Basil,the second for the house,and the next for the oldest member of the house down to the youngest member.There may also be a piece of cake for the cows and a large for the poor.Whoever finds the coin in their piece of cake will be lucky in the next year.
The first preson across the threshold of the house on Nwe Year's Day is said to bring the family good luck throughout the coming year.The father,son or a lucky child should be the first person across the threshold.A lucky child is someone who has both parents still alive.
