对不起，刚才的解释欠妥，这个句子应该是SVOC句型的被动转换，主动形式为They found the thief in possession of a large quantity of stolen property. 被动转换后，原来的宾语成了主语，谓语成了被动形式，其他成分 in possession of... 由原来的主补变为宾补。
