y“到.为止”,意为最晚到周五为止.如by the end of this month.到这个月末.
until 一般与not 一起用.如,The report need not be ready until Friday.个人认为,可以替代原句.意为“到周五必须完成”.

By有表示在这个星期五之前的意思，也就是这个星期五和之前都可以交的意思，而until的话，感觉只能是在这个星期五交的意思。
也就是说，by有完成时的涵义，而until没有，相反在这里的话，until感觉是从这个星期五才可以hand in的意思。

by是在……之前的意思，而until通常用作……not……until……或者until……not……的形式，如:she didn't come back until 9 that evening.
有一种到时候才的感觉，强调“太……”。而在这里，明显不是要表达这种意思。

这题的意思是说你最迟要在星期五就要准备好.所以用by
如果是用until的话,意思是需要到了星期五才能准备好.也就是说星期五之前不能准备好.意思刚好和前者相反.再者,until一般和not连用,not .... until直到...才..
