The language represents the country of the culture.Whether it is Chinese or English,there are some taboos in both languages.The word taboo is a Polynesian word meaning something that is forbidden.In both languages,there are some words that we can't say in both languages.Those words are called taboos.
In both languages,the taboo words include a lot of sensitive words,like illnesses,computer viruses,secretion,toilet,making love and death.For example,when we talk about illnesses,we use "the big C" and "the social disease" for cancer and AIDS,and we say "My computer is having a social virus" ,meaning it has infected by the AIDS virus.When we talk about menstration,we say "to have one's periods",and when we talk about going to the toilet,we say "to pass water" or "do one's business".We say "be in the family way" meaning "be pregnant" and "to pass away" meaning "to die".
Also,the English language has some other taboo words like "old".We use "senior citizen" to mean "old man" and we don't usually ask people's ages.
Next time you go to an English speaking country,please be careful not to say the taboo words.When in Rome,do as the Romans do!
