The American college town has had a character unlike other towns.Cleaner,neater than other towns,with green spaces somewhere toward the center,with white tops of Gothic (哥特式的）towers or windowed dormitories half hidden by trees,they were the little capitals of the academic states.As trading or industrial centers,their life might be hard to be distinguished from that of towns or cities of a like size ,but in their social consciousness there was always some recognition of features,for the heart of the community was a college.Its amazing influences were as spreading as ,if less noticeable than,the quite obvious symbols of college life-playing fields,cafes,and clothing.
And in the early 1900's,the college town was no lunch stop for automobiles.It was separated ,even if it was a town within a city,like the Yale section of New Haven,and it knew its boundaries.It valued its distinctions； if it was uneasy,it was also proud.The campus and college buildings determined its architecture like the old temple and castle of a Greek city-state,a difficult relationship since there was always some doubt in the minds of the town folk whether the college was a parasite (寄生虫）.And many a college town was like a mother who was expecting a quiet and manageable baby,only to give birth to a giant to swallow whole streets and squares as it grew.
