It sounds inappropriate and abject for me, a born and bred Chinese who has been imbibed in far-ranging Chinese culture, to sing a hymn for the English language here. But I surmise that I have to, not only for its omnipresence in the world’s businesses and day-to-day life, not only it adds color and magnitude to resumes, but for the magic, wonder contained and the gargantuan impact it exerts on me. This single language witnesses the gradual metamorphosis of me and my internalization of lifelong values,”hard work pays, determination wins, we work to excel”。Dating back to 9 years ago when I was still a fledging in the 3rd grade, the not-so-qualified English teacher informed us of the three prerequisites of a 21st-century being---computer excellence, a car license and English mastery. Well, I never get around to grasping the true convenience of computers and I never manage to touch the steer of a car, but the English language, has become part and parcel of me, and what ignites my pursuit for better comprehension in literature, an introduction to far-reaching western ideas, an more apprehensive and holistic grasp of occidental culture as well as my own culture reflected, and above all, continuously kindles my passion for the procurement of a better self.
