For most people,newspapers and magazines seem to be significant ways to receive information today.We get economy and politics news from the newspapers or journals,also read the last research paper or the stars’ affairs in the magazines.However,when it comes to getting the knowledge about foreign countries,newspapers and magazines are relatively unhelpful.In most circumstances,people are likely to know the outside by other means.
To begin with,instead of the presswork,it was our parents who gave us the first impression of the foreign countries.Little children cannot read the beautiful language on the newspaper,nor show interest in the complex passages in the magazines.But the parents,who might have heard about the foreign countries,usually teach their children with vivid words and body language that can be easily understood.For example,when I was still a little girl,my mother told me the names of many countries and helped me to figure them out from a world map.
When we grow up and be able to read later,the geography teaching materials become the main source of the information about the foreign countries.Because the books used in class are select and professional,they cover more useful information,such as the locations,climates and cultures of foreign countries,than the magazines and newspapers.So reading the daily publications becomes a way of entertainment or relaxation,rather than gaining knowledge about foreign countries.In addition,if the information in the books cannot satisfied us,we can Google it and get what we want quickly.For instance,many students who want to study abroad may desire for the knowledge about the universities in other countries,which can hardly be found in magazines or newspapers.But they can look for the information on the internet just by typing the name of their virtual universities into the search bar.
Finally,as we become adults,we are capable of affording tours.Thus,travelling abroad and visiting the countries we want to know by ourselves is undeniable the best way to get the information about those places.
To conclude,newspapers and magazines are not the usual means by which people get to know the foreign countries.Instead,we get the information from our parents,geography books,internet and travelling abroad by ourselves.
