INTRODUCTION
Sensors based on fiber optics technologies have been successfully employed in fields,such as telecommunication,electrical devices,aerospace structures,and medical fields.This is because optical fibers have several positive attributes,including (a) small diameter,therefore none or least intrusive to host structures,(b) immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI),(c) high sensitivity,and (d) ability to transmit data as well as being used as a sensor.
Owing to these advantages,efforts have been also directed to develop fiber-optic based sensors for applications in civil engineering,especially in monitoring the conditions of infrastructures.It has been demonstrated that fiber-optic sensors can be used to measure strain and pressure in the structures.Another emerging application of fiber optics sensors in civil engineering is in vehicle wheel load sensors (weigh-in-motion (WIM) technology).WIM system is a system to determine weight of vehicles moving on highway with normal speed.Recently,attempt has been made to use optical fiber in WIM
There have been developments of a few new optical fiber technologies,which show special promise for force,displacement,stress and strain sensing applications.Some of these include the specialized forward time division multiplexing (FTDM) fiber,fiber Bragg grating,and holey fiber.The FTDM dual-core fiber that has two concentric light-guiding regions has shown its potential ability to directly sense and measure magnitudes as well as locations of loads applied at multiple points.
The paper presents the multiple bending analysis of the FTDM dual-core fiber to determine the light loss of its inner light guiding region under mechanical bends.Analytical investigation has been done to study effects of several relevant parameters (such as V numbers,bend length,number of bends,spacing of bends,deflection,and bending radius of the fiber) in order to create proper amount of light leakage from inner core.Details of the FTDM dual-core fiber is briefly explained in the next section.
