Advantages and Disadvantages of N/C
Numerical control (commonly called N/C) has given the manufacturing industry new and greater controls in the design and manufacturing of products.Today, many thousands of N/C machines are in use in large and small machine shops. In these machine shops,N/C may be used to control a simple drilling machine or to control mill apart too complex to machine economically by conventional methods.
By using the N/C ,human error is greatly reduced. The N/C machine produces accurate reproductions of engineering date and the consistency of parts is improved, resulting in less scrap.
N/C machines can produces complex parts thatcould not be made by traditional methods or conventional machines.
N/C reduces tooling and fixture costs. Part ofthese savings are the result of the elimination of elaborate and specially designed tools and fixtures. Storage problems for tools and fixturs are also reduced.
N/C increases flexibility. Engineering changes in production parts are less costly and more rapid, since changes with N/C are quickly accomplished by changing a tape rather than building new jigs and fixtures.
Production planing is easier and more effective with N/C equipment because manufacturing capacity is more constant, predictable, and efficient .Cost estimates are improved because of the reliability and efficiency of N/C.
N/C reduces floor space requirements. Most N/C machine tools will do many different machining operations on a part in one setup compared with traditional methods that include routing the part through several conventional machines. With a single setup N/C machine capable of a variety of operation in a single setup, fewer fixtures are needed, smaller lots can be produced economically, and less storage space is needed.
N/C machines require high initial investments. N/Crequires restraining existing personnel to become skilled programmers and operators.
Mechanical, electrical, and electronicmaintenance personnel are required when working with N/C machines.
N/C is not suitable to long-run application.
