was sitting 正坐在沙发上 表示某一时刻的动作 when 接的时间点 他进来的那一刻
until 在...之前 是一段时间 表示 他进来之前 他父亲一直坐在沙发上 显然不符合题意

他的父亲坐在沙发上和他进来是同时发生的，如果用until就是这个意思他的父亲一直坐在沙发上直到他进来，这个动作就存在刻意性，而前面的那句话就是他回来的时候他的父亲正坐在沙发上，这个动作带有巧合，只是恰好。
