you can let your child watch some english cartoons while you can watch along and teach him how to read and stuff like that,i think it would be interesting for him as well.
I think you can start to teach him how to write when he's older,let's say 11 years old?maybe.
you can also talk to him in english just like how you do that in chinese.
To me,i think the number of words that he can memorize is not a big issue at this stage,instead i think it is best for him to realize that the english is his mother tongue,
just do that in a casual way instead of take it as lectures,but you can do them both.

you should try to find something that your child could remember,if he had nothing to remember,you would take your child to see a doctor as soon as possible.
