理由很简单,前面
In the wild, pygmy chimpanzees are found only inaccessible region south of the Zaire river
这已经是个完整的句子,而且这个后面跟的是逗号而不是句号.说明即使填空了以后也只是一个句子.如果选择A,那么no more than a few are in captivity as a result 也是一个独立的句子,那么这就违反了一个句子一套主谓的语法原则. B 选项有AND 作为连接句子的连词,所以是可选的

as a result 不能作为一个连词来用吗? 那像consequently可以作为连词用吗?

你看看as a result 的位置在句尾，如果连接2个句子，没有这么用的。至于 consequantly 请查字典，看他的词性有没有连词属性。你就明白了。
