我认为 你的 答案错了has deteriorated 并不错.
正确答案 应该是 their covers have 错了.
应该是 its cover has
因为前面说的是 pick one up
是单数.

此句的关键是find接宾语从句和宾+宾补

如果their covers have rotted 理解为宾语从句的话，则必须在and之后加上that。
或者用find sth done “发现...被....或已经...”

因此有两种改法：
1. ... and that their covers have rotted.
2. ...
