1. inhabitant 居民,住户；their inhabitants （前文）那些（地方）的居民=当地居民
not so much because of..., but because of...是一个句式,意思是：不是（很多地）因为.,而（更多）是因为.
2.重点看…according to plan as faithfully as the reports in the science journals indicate,意思是,如果实验能够 与 科学期刊报告指出的那样 一样忠实地去计划并按计划做出结果…….这里的as.as.就是：像（后者说的）那样（副词faithfully）地去（做前者）,所以“后者”——the reports in the science journals indicate（主+谓）就是状语从句；在这里,说话者意图里面“后者”是与“前者”——“实验忠实地按计划做”,前后两个忠实度有一个比较,所以后面是比较状语从句.as是连接词而已.

1.as后的从句，只有主谓，谓语是及物，却没有宾语，这怎么说的通啊？ 2,再如：Nor, if regularity and conformity to a standard pattern are as desirable to the scientist as the writing of his papers would appear to reflect, is management to be blamed for discriminating against the "odd balls" among researchers 。。。.这里的as..as第二个as老师说因为没宾语，所以第二个as是定语从句，和上面那句有何区别？
