a lot of 是看后面跟的名词是否为可数名词还是不可数名词的
如果是可数名词，那么就要用复数，和many是一样的
如果是不可数名词，那就要用单数，和much是一样的
而 lot 的单复数，用冠词a 或者lots 来表示
"They have lots of (much) money in the bank."
"A lot of (many) Americans travel to Europe."
"We got lots of (many) mosquitoes last summer."
"We got lots of (much) rain last summer."

a lot 在这里相当于量词，是一大堆的意思。。其作用和 a cup, a set等等一样。
比如：a cup of tea 是一杯茶。a set of tools 是一套工具。

a lot of是“很多”的意思 后面的students都是复数形式 在这里 是复数就用are ,is表示的是单数；the majority of意思也是"大多数”的意思 ，也是一个复数词组。首先你要理解are是表示复数，is表示单数。例如He is a boy。They are boys。理解吗？

A lot of 和the Majority of是不同的。前者主要修饰后面的名词，主语当然是名词；显然学生是复数，因此用Are 而后者，不同。后者的单复数和Majority的形式有关。若Majority是复数形式，就用复数，若是单数形式，就用单数 同类的还有Quantity
