1.Analyze the application of behaviorism in second language learning.
Behaviorism is one of the main schools of modern psychology in the early of 20th century in America.Behaviorists believe that behavior is the response to the outside environmental changes from human beings,so they only research behavior rather than the inner mental changes.There are two chief representative personage:Watson and Skinner.Their main point of view is that learning is the association between stimulus and responses.Behaviors of learner are the response to the environmental stimulus ,so called “S-R Theory”
Behaviorists view language as behavior and believe that language learning is simply a matter of imitation and habit-formation.According to their theory “Contrastive Analysis”,the native language and second language both have differences and similarities,teachers who have made a comparison of the foreign language with native language to study a method for how to teach the second language.In practice,teachers should give students continuous stimulus and reinforcement in learning.By using these kinds of teaching methods,such as dialogue and drills,repetition and memorization,pattern practice,they believe students can study well.
Application shows that these teaching methods are not efficient.In brief,behavior is acquired by continuous practice but language not,it can’t explain some special situation,such as why animal and wolf child can’t acquire language by stimulus and practice?

应用表明,这种教学方法的说服力不足.简言之,行为是后天通过不断的实践而获得,但语言并非如此,它不能解释某些特殊情况,如为什么动物和狼的孩子无法通过刺激和实践而学会语言呢?
