不应该理解为not 放在动词后面，动词后面随便放什么，应该理解为放在形容词前面，是可以的。

应该是“He doesn't live far away from the sea”
“not ”可以放在动词后面，但一般是及物动词。所以你刚那个句子勉强可以，但最好还是不要。因为“live”是不及物动词，就像“he doesn't come here”一样，我们不会说“he comes not here ”
