For a time in history England was conquered by the Normans who spoke French.Thus English farmers raised animals and poultry for which they have an English name,but the food later prepared from their meat was offered to the Norman lords who addressed them in French.
You see,beef and pork are both French names for their meat,while cattle and pigs are English names for the animals.

这个不一定吧，你看chicken是小鸡，那还有母鸡hen和公鸡cock。还有牛的表达也不止一种。还有我知道的pork是个French word，并不是单纯来自英语。还有就是动物和meat at table是不同的
