Natsume Yuujinchou is about a teenage boy who can see ayakashi since he was a little boy. After chased by two youkais. Takashi accidentlly broke a rope which is a barrier and frees Madara (the most kawaii ayakashi ever!). Madara told him about a woman named Natsume Reiko, who can also see Ayakashi, were in fact she is Takashi’s grandmother. Madara asked Takashi about the “Book of Friends”.
Takashi reaches home, that reveals that no one knows about him seeing ayakashis. Takashi found the Book of Friends, Madara suddenly appeared and tried to snatch the book but he failed. Madara told further explanation about the “Book of Friends”, where names of ayakashi that Reiko has defeated was written. Having the book, it allows a person to summon an ayakashi whose name is written in the book. Their conversation was interrupted by two visitors, the two youkai who chased him earlier. Madara was convincing Takashi to give him the book but Takashi refuses. Takashi told him that he want to protect the book as a memory of his grandmother. The two deal that Takashi will return the name of each Ayakashi in the book and if he dies he will give the book to Madara. Takashi followed Madara’s instruction how to return the name of the Ayakashi.
As the yokai returnd her name, she flashesback on how she met Reiko. In a shrine a youkai was hungry and tried to eat an offering then a woman in a school uniform, Reiko, got first the bun and ate it. Reiko offered a challenge that if th yokai lost, she will become her follower. Eventually the yokai lost and Reiko told her that if she called her out the yokai should come to her side. The yokai became attached to Reiko and after several days not being called. The yokai became more lonely and wants her name returned
