Nowadays,it is not unusual for defense attorneys in murder trails to argue that their clients are insane,or were __at the time they committed the crimes they are charged with.This strategy,in fact,is very old.Important criteria usede in courts today to__whether a defendant is sane or not date to a landmark case that was tried in England court in 1843.
Young Daniel M'Naghten was under the __that the police,England's Prime Minister Robert Pell and others were out to destroy hislife.On January 20,1843,he responded byshooting to__the Prime Minister's private secretary,Edward Drummond,whom M'Naghten mistook for Pell.At the trail,the prosecution claimed that__M'Nanghten's motives were unclear,he was nevertheless guilty of murder and should be punished.In the end,however,the judges__M'Naughten not guilty on the grounds that he was insane.In forming their decision,the judges applied two rules:first,every person is__ to be sane and responsible for his or her actions unless it can be proved that the person is mentally disordered;secondly,a successful__defense must prove that the person,at the time he or she committed the crime,was not capable of understanding what he or she was doing__to a mental disorder.
In M'Naghten's case,the judges concluded that both rules had been satisfied.The test they used has been modified__the years but is still widely applied in similar cases today.
