British is an adj.and is always adj.which can't be used as a noun.
So when we talk about the people in Britain,we have to say,the British (people) = the + adj.referring to " a group of people" ,like the injured, the wounded, the rich, the poor, etc.
Actually, there are special noun forms referring to the British:a Brit/ Brits = a Briton/ Britons.
Let's go back to "American"
1.adj.American people/ cities,or your nationality is American = coming from America
2.Noun.
a person who comes from America/ the US,
So we can directly say,an American, two Americans.a lot of Americans.
Got it?
