The difference lies in the Times(时态).When I use "was not asked" in the sentence witten above,i mean,the school's interviewer did not ask their son in that moment.However when "had not been asked" was used,i mean the school interviewer never asked their son before.So,do you comprehand it now?

"was not asked " is a sentence in the simple past tense ,eg. I was not asked any questions by the headteacher.
"had not been asked " is a sentence in the past perfect tense,(past in the past) eg I had not been asked any questions by the headteacher before yesterday..
