第一个空格是what引导的感叹句,what a serious disease he had been suffering from.而如果用How的话,句子的结构不一样,应为How serious a disease he...
第二个空格whether表示“是否”,在介词后只能用whether而不能用if.

选A。先看后面的选项，从句意可以得知是填“是否”。介词后不能用if，只能用whether.这就可以排除B、C、D了。
