The European forest products industry has a unique relation to the environmental issues.
The main raw material for its production is wood,a renewable biomaterial that gives
recyclable fibre products,can store carbon dioxide and provide a source of renewable
energy.The competitiveness of the European forest products industry depends to a great
extent on responsible managing of the natural resources and manufacturing of products in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.Significant investments in environmental
protection measures have been made during the last decades in order to create sustainability.This includes increased utilization of recovered paper,commitment to environment,health and safety principles,reduced air,water and waste emissions,and large efforts to become more energy efficient.
The potential hazards associated with nanotechnology have recently been covered in detail in European reports (Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering 2004,Hett 2004,Luther 2004).One fundamental aspect of nanotechnology is that a downsizing process has been used to reach a certain nanometre range to obtain new material properties.Any material reduced to the size of a nanoparticle or nanotube can suddenly behave in a different manner demonstrating completely new properties.This allows nanomaterials to be used in new applications and products of industrial interest.The reactivity increases due to the exceptionally large relative surface area of nanoparticles,and substances otherwise considered completely harmless can start to show hazardous properties.This can,for example,be compared with earlier studies on the influence of air pollution by nanoparticles on human health and has started a debate on the possible health and environmental risks with nanotechnology.
The report by the Royal Society and Royal Academy of Engineering (2004) concludes that most nanotechnologies pose no new health or safety risks,and that currently health,safety and environmental hazards are restricted to discrete,manufactured nanoparticles and nanotubes in a free rather than an embedded form.
To address the introduction of nanotechnology in a responsible manner,the following
actions have been highlighted by the European Commission (2004):
▼to identify and address safety concerns (real or perceived) at the earliest possible
stage;
▼ to reinforce support for the integration of health,environmental,risk and other
related aspects into R&D activities together with specific studies;
▼to support the generation of data on toxicology and ecotoxicology (including dose
response data) and evaluate the potential human and environmental exposure.
