Lights use a lot of energy. You know that one of the easiest ways to save energy in your house is by turning off the lights when you leave a room. Did you know you can also save energy if your family buys energy-saving light bulbs?
Most people have incandescent (in-can-DESS-ent) light bulbs in their house. These bulbs get very hot and use a lot of energy.
The newer energy-saving lights are called compact fluorescent (flor-ESS-ent) bulbs. They generate 70 percent less heat than a regular bulb. They use less energy to make the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb.
Compact fluorescent light bulbs do cost more, but they last a lot longer than incandescents. You would have to buy 13 incandescent bulbs in the time it takes for one compact fluorescent to burn out. Your family can save $30 or more in energy costs for each bulb. What would you buy with the extra money?
