the hills threatens the surrounding villages with destruction 拟人句,可以翻译成：周围的山村随时面临着山泥倾泻
for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would cause serious floods as well.
这里的for表示因为,交代上个短句的原因；not only...but...不仅.还/而且.；as well 同样地
翻译：因为暴雨不仅会把泥土冲掉,而且还会造成严重的洪水灾难.
