2 还原 the professor is Entirely devoted to his scientific experiments(be devoted to 固定搭配 意思是：致力于 )
3 去掉一部分使之变成非谓语 Entirely devoted to his scientific experiments （稍微解释下：由于一个句子就只有一个动词,含devoted 这个句子不能成为独句 就只能降级为非谓语 去掉了动词 就成了非谓语形式了）

其实不是过去式，而是过去分词，这是过去分词作状语，原来有个短语是be devoted to，过去分词作状语时都是这样。另外还有现在分词做状语的，ing形式
