Language is a reflection of culture.Deng Yanchang and Liu Runqing(1989) made a more complete state of the relations between language and culture that is language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it.Language and culture are two cooperative aspects.Being an intrinsic part of culture,language carries culture,mirrors culture,spreads culture and helps develop culture.Language also depends on culture,reflects and influences culture ,hat is,language,taken as a part of culture,also conveys culture.It is impossible to separate the use of language from culture,without language,they maintain,culture would not be possible .The language of a nation carries the cultural and social life experiences of that nation,and reflects important feature of the national culture.When we refer to the relationship between language and culture ,we have to mention the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis,which in essence says that the structure or the language one habitually used influences the manner in which one thinks and behaves.This hypothesis shows that language is not only a means of reporting experience but,more important,it is a way to define experience.
Culture influences language in all the following aspects.
First,culture restricts the formation and development of linguistic elements,such as,speech sounds,vocabulary and grammar.The polysemy of word(一词多义) lies in that it is the symbol of actual word,reflects people's deferent views towards the word,that is to say,it is the national culture that determines the meaning of words.
Second,culture determines the content and way of reference of the language.As we all know that what the language refers is things and objects centering on human beings in cultural word.
The way language refers and reflects things and objects embodies cultural mind of people.
Third,the influence of culture has on language reflects in people's linguistic thoughts and their way of express.As the carrier and tool of express of thoughts,on in hand language advances the development of thoughts,on the other hand,it is restricted by the thoughts.Considering the relationship between language and culture,it is necessary to encourage acculturation in English teaching,especially in oral English teaching.
