Mineral matrix effects on hydrocarbon
generation
Mechanisms involved in the alteration of organic
matter during thermal maturation are difficult to
investigate,especially because of:(i) the complex
and variable composition of natural organic material;
and (ii) significant effects of the mineral matrix
during the alteration of organic matter in sediments
which fall into two main processes:catalysis and
adsorption.It has been often noted that some minerals,
such as clays (Tannenbaum and Kaplan,1985;
Huizinga et al.,1987; Hetenyi,1995; Li et al.,1998)
or transition metal oxides (Mango,1997; Karabakan
and Yu¨ru¨m,1998),may act as catalysts during
kerogen or oil cracking and increase the relative
yield of light hydrocarbons and gases.
The most commonly used minerals are montmorillonite,
illite and calcite.
