In the north of Scotland there is a lake called Loch Ness.It is the biggest lake in Britain.It is over 30 kilometers long and nearly 300 meters deep.It is cold and dark and not many people went there until after 1930.Then a road was made around the lake.Holiday markers began to use the road,and this was when the story began.
Someone said that he had seen a monster in the lake.He said is was 12 meters long.It had a long neck and a small hed.Then someone else said he had seen it also.Others said the same thing and in 1933 a London doctor took a photo.It looked like amonster with a long neck and a thick body but the photo was not clear.A newspaper printed the picture and called it the Loch Ness Monster,or"Nessie".
Then the argument began.Some people,however,were certain there was something living in the lake.Others said there was nothing there.
In 1961,a lot of people joined together to make a real effort to see and photograph the monster if there was one.Several tines people thought they saw something but after 10 years there was still no real proof of the monster.
Later,underwater television cameras were used,but again no real proof of the monster was found.However,they did find something interesting:a huge underwater cave.It was big enough to be home of a monster,but of course,it was not a proof.
In 1975,however,some American scientists formed a research group.They used an underwater camera.It took pictures every 70 seconds.Some of the pictures seemed to show a red-brown creature.Its body was about four meters long and it had a very ugly head on the end of a four-meter neck.Many people then began to believe in the monster,but even today we can't be certain whether "Nessie" is real or not.
The majority of the earth's oceans and remote inland lakes are unexplored,so there may be creatures which have rarely been seen or identified by humans.Over the centuries sailors have told stories of strange creatures in the oceans.Many of these descriptions are very similar to creatures that we thought were extinct.People thought the coelacanth disappeared 70 million years ago until it was discovered alive and well in 1938.In Vietnam recently,several previously unknown animals have been found in the highlands,including a species of deer.
Who knows what other finds may yet be made?Many of these so-called monsters might be rare animal species.
Here are just a few famous monsters which regularly appeared in the news.
Lake Storsjon in Sweden is home to a sea monster called Storsie which thousands of people have reported seeing since 1635.Some say Storsie has a head like a horse while others claim it is a big snake-kile creature.Like Nessie,Storsie might be a huge sturgeon,a fish with a long head and pointed fins on its back.Sturgeon can grow to 60m long and weigh 227kg.
For years in the swampy jungles of Central Africa,people have reported seeing a strange creature known as
Mokele Mbembe.The creature may be a kind of dinosaur.Several expeditions have set out to find the monster in the remote lakes and swamps but they all failed so far.
French explorer Samuel de Champlain reported seeing a strange serpent in 1609 in a lake which later took his name——Lake Champlain in the US.Since then many others have seen Champ,as the monster is called.Some experts suggest that people may really have seen logs pushed to the surface by a pqwerful underwater current.
Many of the descriptions of lake monsters are very similar,so somee people believe that they might be the same species just to attract attention——and tourists!
