The damage will be a lot less than was feared as the oil was gushing.请问为什么是was feared 而不是feared?

1.因为害怕的是人,不是damage,所以用被动语态.
2.第二句话只是条件从句,主句还在后面没出来,此条件状语中,thrumming的逻辑主语显然是you,thrumming on the other side of the room是一个Ing短语,作伴随状语,表示与前面的read同时进行.

thrumming 的主语是your laptop，with ……是介词短语表示伴随状态（即与read同时），做状语。
