Line,staff and matrix organization
The main departments of an organization reflect the key functions on which it reles.A typical manufacturing firm will have (at least) production,purchasing,accounts and sales departments.The system of organization based on these functions is known as line organization.The advantages of line organizations are that responsibilities are well-defined and understood,and the simple nature of the structure does not inhibit communication.
As they grow in size,organizations come to rely more heavily on specialist functions and personal.A good illustration is the developed nature of the personal function in medium-sized and large firms.A line and staff organization recognizes the importance of such specialists,although these problems can arise:
 A lack of ‘line’understanding of ‘staff’techniques,procedures and language;
 Some line managers feeling inhibited or threatened by the existence and work of the ‘staff’specials;
 Communication slowing down due to the increased complexity of the organization structure.
