In "The relationship of language and culture," the author states that language is closely related to culture and it is also part of culture. From dynamic view, language and culture interact with each other and shape each other. Language is much more than semantic, phonological and lexical. It serves for communication as a medium of exchanging different ideas, beliefs or customs. Therefore, language expresses, embodies and symbolizes cultural reality.
From Emily Dickinson’s poem, the author considers that human intervention is always present at the culture. At same time, culture is identified as participant in discourse communities that share a social and historical context from the same linguistic forms, and through generation to generation. Besides that, people also invent culture and share dreams across imagined communities and through language.
In this text, the author presents Linguistic relativity theory that studies the complex relationship between culture and language. Moreover, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis mentioned by Kramsch states that the structure of a language can strongly influence or determine someone`s world view, and an individual of one language cannot be understood by those who speak another language.
