这是介词的错误应该是worked in a factory而不是on the factory
canoes是一种交通工具，还原从句的话就是they had come to the island in canoes翻译一下就是这附近有两个canoes(我忘记具体是啥了，反正是中水上交通工具)他们是乘这两个canoes来到这个小岛的
