过去的过去,是过去完成时,但是在本题中,并没出现过去时,在but后面的句子有一个before that ,that 指代的是前面那句话,但是前面那句话明显是一个现在时（一般现在时和现在完成时）,所以这里只是一个在过去对将来的虚拟.be to do 是将来时的用法,这样的翻译也更符合题意
