An outline of the synthesis of the Ru(II) complexes 1 and 2 with the new PyIP ligand is presented in scheme 1.

The ligand PyIP was prepared through condensation of 1,10-phenanthroline-5,6-dione with Pyrene-1-carbaldehyde on the basis of the method for the preparation of imidazole rings according to Steck and Day [17].
