Robots are everywhere, for example in cartoons. Look! Here come two famous cartoon robots of very different styles.

I am a lovely robot made by a scientist. Since the scientist’s son died in a car accident, he built me in his son’s image and loves me as if (宛如) I were his real son. The scientist gives me many super powers—eyes like searchlights (探照灯), ears that hear for miles, fingers with lasers (激光), legs that fire rockets and the ability to fly!
Along with these powers, I also have human emotions (情感). I grow up by fighting evil and protecting humans. Am I a robot or a human? Well, it’s hard to say, and it doesn’t matter .

We are giant robots starring in the cartoon series, Gundam. Gundam is also our name.
So, why are we called by this strange name? It’s a long story. At first, someone combined the English word“Gun”with“Dom”from the word“Freedom”, to form the name“Gundom”. Then they changed Gundom to Gundam, which means the power is strong enough to hold back (阻挡) enemies like a dam (堤坝) holds back floods.
In fact, we are usually not robots that have emotions, but large vehicles (车辆) controlled by the human pilots inside us.
