wherever it went, it left behind it a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits.(it 在这里是指puma）这句话来自新概念英语第三册.
it left behind it .感觉这个表达方式很奇怪,有达人能帮忙解答一下吗.

本来应该是it left a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits behind it的,结构是leave + sth +介词短语（充当宾补）,但由于宾语a trail of dead deer and small animals like rabbits 太长,所以把behind it提前了.
如：
I left the shoes behind the door.我把鞋留在门后了.
I left behind the door the shoes that you had given me.（我把你给我的鞋留在门后了）

不奇怪阿，这是形式主语的表达方式。
例如：It doesn't matter too much to me what you do or where you go
大致意思就是：你做什么或去什么地方，对我都无关紧要
不用逐字翻译，这样的表达方式就是能让人很快进入主题。
