1.Taking off from an Atlantic coast airport, the plane IS soon flying over the gentle slopes of the Appalachian Mountains.
2.Continuing into the west, the plane FLIES over vast prairies and rough cattle-grazing country.

go,come,start,move,sail,leave,arrive,stay,live,fly,等可用进行时态表示按计划即将发生的动作,例如:
I'm leaving for Beijing.

前面这句话用了is flying over ...the mountians,注意到这里用了soon。使用现在进行时的目的是为了强调当前的状态:fly over the mountains,其实说话人是为了突出an atlantic coast airport 和 appalachian mountains之间的对比,强调飞机飞的很快。
