其实这种用法很正常，这是一个独立主格结构，对前面的There be结构起补充说明的作用。这两个部分可以改为一个并列句，即：
There are a large number of shopping malls in the U.S and an absolute majority of them locate in NY.

现在分词做伴随状语
但是不太看到和there be句型一起用
不是很习惯
