than这个词的前后应该是一种平行的结构,前面是he did,后面是he expected,这就叫平行结构.也就是对“he did怎么样”和“he expected怎么样”进行对比,“怎么样”就是状语much better,再加一个介宾短语做状语“in the exam”.
