Long ago,people did not know how to count the years and so they asked the Jade Emperor for help.The Jade Emperor decided to hold a race through a forest and across a river on his birthday with all the animals as competitors and that the first twelve would have a year named after each of them.At that time,the rat and the cat were good friend and so decided to help each other,but worried that they might sleep in.So they asked the ox,an early riser,for help .On the morning of the race,the ox,seeing that the rat and the cat were too sleepy to get up,told them to jump onto his back and he would carry them.The ox was crossing the river when the rat woke up and realized that the cat.As soon as the ox reached the river bank,the rat ran as fast as he could and won the race with the ox in second place.The tiger came third and the rabbit,which jumped across the river on the backs of the other animals,came fifth.The snake and the horse were next followed by the goat,the monkey and the rooter which shared a tree trunk to cross the river.The dog came eleventh and finally the pig just managed to make last place.While these twelve animals were celebrating,the cat finally arrived.When he found he was too late,he tried to catch the rat for revenge.That is why cats,to this day,like to catch rats and mice to eat.
