The burglars themselves __ (be) no longer there, but they probably only just ___ (leave) because a cigarette was still burning on the table. Probably they ___(hear) the lift coming up and __ (run) down the fire escape. They ___(help) themselves to her whisky, too, but there ___ (be) a little left, so she ___(pour) herself out a drink. She _will wondered__ (wonder) if they _finds__(find) her jewellery and rather _hoping__ (hope) that they had. The jewellery _was given__ (give) to her by her husband, who ___ (die) some years before. Since his death she ___ (not have) the heart to wear it, yet she __ (not want) to sell it.
