ing 是进行时态更何况句子结尾用了 now 也就是说明是现在
整句话的大概意思就是现在那里有一千多人站在大门外面而这个句子表示的是现在正在进行的时态所以在stand后面加上了ing

there are, 有什么什么的意思，now是进行时态，整个句子的意思就是说现在门口外站着很多人，表示现在进行时。这个句子也可以换成：Thousands of people are standing outside the gate now.有动词应该用动词+ing表示进行时，句子前面有are，所以后面就只用standing.
