Often we have a hard time memorizing English vocabulary even if we have worked hard on it. When that happens, you have to look up the dictionary and find its explanations and synonyms. Try to interpret its English explanation and think about how are these synonyms associated. Use it as often as you can. I personally find it effective and efficient. I used to be confused and struggling as you are, but I can tell you it really helps.
